2.5 out of 5 stars

A good first half wasted by an average second half and a dud climax. The film is about an encounter specialist (Rajni) who doesn’t believes in delayed justice and an experienced judge (Amitabh) who thinks hurried justice through encounters is wrong. The first half is very racy and the interval portion sets the stage for a great moral conflict. The second half starts well as an investigative plot, however it fizzles out once the commercial elements in the form of unwanted fight sequences and forced mass situations. The villain (Rana) appears out of nowhere and in the climax becomes a joke. Rajni has underplayed his character giving ample scope for FaFa to take the claps. Amitabh is good too. Rana and Manju Warrier seem to be wasted. The BGM is repetitive. The film has a good story and director Gnanavel has built it well. After a long time it is good to see Rajni in a film with a strong subject. However, that also becomes the films failure point as the director has to make a lot of compromises to cater to the top star’s mass image. I see this as a missed opportunity for the director who could have delivered another Jai Bhim if he had not tried to balance his pan India stars.
