Thoongavanam is an interesting crime thriller that works big time on many fronts. Kamal is a corrupt cop who along with Yugi Sethu tries to steal a drug consignment from a drug lord, Prakashraj. In this process, his gets exposed and Prakashraj kidnaps his son. He goes to Prakashraj’s club to get his son back. Two other cops Trisha and Kishore follow him. What happens out there forms the rest of the plot. For the first time Kamal has bought the remake rights of French film, Sleepless Nights and openly acknowledged that the film is a remake. The film is a faithful remake with no deviations and that’s the best part. The films works because there are no dull moments, is just over 2hrs in run time, no songs, mild humour and most importantly even Kamal underplays the role without any overacting. Every character has been cast perfectly. BGM by Gibran is very good. I liked it more than the French original because this has Kamal.
