Thalaimuraigal is good. I was skeptical before watching the film. We have seen duds from many top directors who wanted to make a comeback (Balachander, Bharathiraja, Mahendran, Sridhar,…). We have seen even the current generation directors struggle to understand audience’s taste. Infact, director Balu Mahendra’s previous film with Dhanush was also a flop. I was pleasantly surprised to see that Balu Mahendra has still not lost it. The film is a touching story about the bonding between a grandfather and his grandson. Within the first 10 minutes, the film draws you in. The dialogues are brilliant and every scene has a purpose. The director has also played the role of grandfather and carries the film on his shoulders. There are no songs yet Illayaraja’s background score is the biggest asset. The film has a lot of english dialogues and will definitely do well in the international circuit. The film is slow but at 1hr 45min run time makes it slick. The entire plot is based out of village with very few characters. The film has been shot using a canon DSLR camera in natural lighting this making the cost of production minimal. This clearly shows the brilliance of Balu who has walked the talk on how to make a commercially successful art house film.
