I always used to wonder why certain english movie genres aren’t made in tamil. However, there was one type of movie which I was sure cannot be made for tamil audience and those were the zombie movies. Miruthan is tamil’s first zombie movie and the director deserves to be appreciated for his effort. The story is pretty straight forward. Jayam Ravi is a traffic inspector and he falls in love with doctor Lakshmi Menon. A sudden virus attack leaves the town infected with zombies. How Jayam Ravi saves the heroine and in the process helps her find an antidote forms the plot. The first half is very good and the director makes it an edge of the seat thriller. It is the second half where he loses direction and struggles to complete the film. I always know why our folks couldn’t compete with Hollywood and this film reaffirmed my belief. Hollywood makes unbelievable stories in a believable way and we make a believable story unbelievable! When everything was going well and when the audience were OK with Jayam Ravi killing hundred of zombies with a pistol and shotgun; our hero suddenly gets into a hand fight with thousands of zombies!! The climax is a complete letdown. Lakshmi Menon disappoints. The film is watchable once for the new genre and especially the kids will love this time of a movie. Fortunately, it is certified U/A and hence you can take your kids with you.
