4 out of 5 stars

Watched this documentary on Rajinikanth at the Venice Film Festival. I normally don’t review documentaries/shorts but making an exception here because this one is on our Super Star. Director Rinku Kalsy has researched well and spent almost 5 years in the making of this film. The effort clearly shows. No time has been wasted in setting the context – the love his fans have on Rajni. The director cleverly chooses not to focus on Rajni but follow the lives of 3 different fans: one who treats him as God and comes up on life, one who spends all his earning on him and one who earns by being him (?!). The documentary doesn’t get into any trap. In fact there is no documentary feel. As someone who knows the setting well and who has been a part of this for several years, it is very easy to relate. The director could have focussed on the punch dialogues and how they have become management lessons (during the Q&A session she said that they had a budget constraint and hence couldn’t afford more clips). Great effort and a wonderful tribute.
