2.5 out of 5 stars

Maari is a slow paced Mass film that is mostly lifeless. The film is watchable only for Dhanush’s energy but offers nothing new. Dhanush is a local don. Vijay Yesudas a police officer creates problems for him. How he manages forms the beaten to death plot. The biggest flaw is in the casting. Except for Dhanush no one else has been cast properly. Vijay Yesudas is pathetic as a villain. Kajal Agarwal is completely wasted and looks tired most of the time. One does not know why she has not been used properly in the film. For a mass film there is absolutely no glamour or item song! The only saving grace is Robo Shankar’s comedy and Anirudh’s music. The song picturizations are below average. The hit number, “Donu Donu” appears as a montage song?! A few mass scenes are good. Director Balaji Mohan is out of his comfort zone and that is clearly evident. Though you enjoy certain parts of the movie, overall it is a disappointed (or) did we have too much expectation? Still, who creates these expectations and whose responsibility is it to fulfil those hypes?
