4 out of 5 stars

Cuckoo is poetic. I walked into this movie with a bias as I loved debutant director, Raju Murugan’s “Vadiyum Muthalum”, a series in Anandha Vikatan magazine. Most movies with hero as a blind person have been a big flop (Kaasi is a notable exception) and in this film both the protagonists are blind. It is a beautiful love story than unfolds in railway stations, Moore market and marriage halls. The film is slow yet keeps you hooked for most part. Attakathi Dinesh is brilliant and deserves a National Award. New heroine, Malavika has also given a stellar performance. Santhosh Narayanan’ songs are awesome and BGM is equally good. I thought I am the one who is mad about these songs but there were many who started clapping as soon as the songs started. To top this there are many Illayaraja songs in this film and I just couldn’t control my excitement. The films length could have been reduced, especially the second half drags many a times. Dialogues are a big asset – “There are many people who have eyes but very few with a heart”. The characterisation is also good, especially the man on train, a watch and MGR. Kudos to the director for a good positive climax.
