Yet another gem from Studio Ghibli. It is such a treat to watch their films. It is the story of a girl born from a bamboo stalk and raised by a bamboo cutter and his wife. This magical child grows fast and the bamboo makes the couple rich. The father decides that this girl is a princess and brings her up like one. He tries to get her married to rich people while the princess prefers a simple life. What happens when the emperor himself takes a liking for her forms the rest of the story. The story is engaging. Animation is top class and the colours bring this 2D sketch animation to life. A few philosophical and surreal scenes could have been cut to make the film shorter. The ending is real and moving.
